“Good morning,” he greeted them with what he hoped was a calm air. Vorpan slowly set his cup down and inclined his head to them. Both carried trays with their breakfast and only wore their lower armor. Vorpan paused mid-sip and slowly lowered his cup to see Tern and Skyler standing in front of him. He had worried where he could go for his secret early shifts and not draw attention to himself after Ephrain had issued his challenge. Vorpan smiled into his cup as he imagined how delighted Ephrain would be. Ephrain would be at the bridge probably and be pleased with himself for being there first for once. Soon he would be able to go up to the bridge too. It was still early enough that the two shifts hadn’t switched yet. They’d ignored him in his corner as they reached the end of their night shifts or were getting ready for their day shift. Vorpan had been grateful when the bleary eyed troopers present had just nodded before turning back to their quiet conversations or caf. He gulped down the dark liquid as he skimmed the datapad in front of him, reading reports and signing off orders.Įxcept for a handful of troopers, the mess was abandoned. He hated caf, but he would drink as much as it would take to keep him awake for the coming day. Vorpan sighed into his hot caf and sipped at the bitter liquid. Vorpan flinched like he always did at Ephrain’s nickname for him, but forced himself to smile back.

“I’ll get to the bridge before you one day, Victor,” Ephrain challenged him with a bright smile. His jaw ached with the urge to copy the action, but he clenched his teeth and focused on his datapad. He quickly looked away when Ephrain began to yawn. “I sleep,” Vorpan answered and chuckled when Ephrain rolled his eyes and leaned a hip against the holo table. On the other hand, he didn’t want the others to discover how little he slept.

He had been wondering why Ephrain had been coming earlier than he was scheduled to appear on the bridge. Vorpan didn’t know if he wanted to chuckle or wince at Ephrain’s words. “You’re always here so early and I kept coming earlier and earlier, but you’re always here! Do you ever sleep?”Īh, that’s what he meant. Vorpan frowned in confusion as the young man crossed his arms.

“I thought I could finally beat you to the bridge!” Ephrain complained, throwing his hands up into the air. The padwan stepped onto the bridge of the Tide and pouted at Vorpan. He swore softly when his datapad clattered to the table surface and glanced back to see Ephrain scowling at him. Vorpan flinched at the loud exclamation behind him as the doors slid open. He might as well get some work done if he wasn’t going to sleep. Vorpan shuffled towards the fresher to shave and get ready for the day. He wouldn’t be getting any more sleep tonight. Vorpan tore his gaze away from the bed and rubbed his hands over his face with a groan. Screams echoed in his ears and his chest felt tight. His breath caught in his throat at the thought of laying down again. A quick check of his comm brace confirmed that he had only slept a little less than three hours. He winced when the lights came on and he padded over to where his armor was neatly stacked. Vorpan pushed himself up and sighed tiredly as he palmed the controls. He was in his quarters on the Venator Tide. He slowly lowered his hands to feel the cool floor and Vorpan leaned his back against the cold wall. His heart thunders in his chest and ears, loud enough to almost drown out his heavy panting. His chest heaves, sucking in deep lungfuls of air and his eyes fly around the dark room.Ī few faint lights from the controls by his door. He falls out of his bunk with a grunt before he’s scrambling against the cool metal floor and pressing himself into a corner, hands raised. Vorpan jolts awake with a strangled cry, kicking against the blanket wrapped around his legs. Osik - Shit Vorpan struggles with nightmares until he's reminded he's not alone.
